Ring Nebula
M57 in Lyra is one of the most iconic planetary nebulae in the sky, the glowing shroud cast off by a dying Sun-like star around 2,570 light-years away. What looks like a simple ring is actually closer to a barrel or football-shaped cloud of gas seen end-on, with the bright band we see being a denser equatorial waist wrapped around the central cavity. At its heart sits a small, intensely hot white dwarf, the exposed core of the progenitor star, blasting the surrounding gas with ultraviolet light that drives its blue-green and red glow. Studying M57 offers a preview of the fate awaiting our own Sun in roughly five billion years, as it sheds its outer layers and leaves behind a similar compact remnant.
